Haledon Borough Council Passes Resolution Denouncing Arizona Law

Discrimination of Latino Americans cannot be tolerated

July 19, 2010

Haledon, NJ – Last week, the Haledon Borough Council unanimously passed a resolution denouncing the recent discriminatory immigration legislation passed in Arizona.

"We felt as elected officials it was important to send a message that we cannot tolerate discriminatory laws anywhere in the United States – even as far away from Haledon as Arizona,” stated Mayor Domenick Stampone. “Most importantly, we are sending a message to the Latino population in Haledon and in Passaic County that these types of ordinances will never happen under our leadership.”

“As an immigrant to the United States, I know firsthand the challenges faced when trying to find your way in a new country,” stated Haledon Councilman Reynaldo Martinez. “We cannot stand idly by while discriminatory laws like this are passed, and we must make our voices heard in opposition. I hope Passaic County Sheriff candidate Felix Garcia and Freeholder candidate Thomas Gomez will join Mayor Stampone and the entire Haledon Council in denouncing this law. This is not a partisan political issue, and I hope they can rebuff the Republican Party in Passaic County and join us in opposition.”
